Matariki

For our end of term writing assessment we were focusing on writing a report. We wrote about Matariki. We did a lot of research and found out lots of new information about this special time in the Maori calendar.
We discovered Matariki is the Maori New Year. It is when the 7 visible stars of the Matariki constellation are seen once in the pre dawn sky between the end of May and beginning of June. This sighting kicks off the celebrations and festivals that herald the start of the new year for many New Zealanders. It is a time to feast, remember the dead and celebrate new life, get together with family and friends and enjoy living.
Who knows? Next year we might even get out of bed and see if we can see these special stars!
